In Memory of Horst Köhler

Former German President Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler, a long-time companion of the Global Ethic Foundation, passed away on February 1, 2025. With his passing, we lose an outstanding personality who dedicated himself with great commitment to the ethical dimensions of globalization and the dialogue between business, politics, and society.
SUPPORT FOR A GLOBAL ETHIC
Horst Köhler recognized early on the importance of ethical principles in economics. As early as 1997, in his role as President of the German Savings Banks Association, he supported Hans Küng’s call for a global ethic as the foundation of a fair and sustainable economic order. He actively promoted dialogue on these issues and helped the Global Ethic Foundation present its work to an international audience. Among other things, he played a key role in ensuring that the exhibition World Religions – Universal Peace – Global Ethic could be displayed in the gallery of the International Monetary Fund in Washington in 2002.
A particular highlight of his support was his fourth Global Ethic speech on December 1, 2004, in Tübingen. As Germany’s Federal President, he delivered a powerful address titled What Do Others Have to Do with Us?, emphasizing Germany’s responsibility in a globalized world.
Even after his presidency, Horst Köhler remained closely connected to the Global Ethic Foundation. As a member of the Board of Trustees, he enriched our work with valuable insights and deep interest. His vision, humanity, and tireless commitment to global justice will be deeply missed.
The Global Ethic Foundation and the Global Ethic Institute will honor his memory with great respect. Our thoughts are with his family.
